8 tips for selecting your videographer

1. Check whether or not the company is available for your event date. Is the company a member of an established professional educational organization such as Wedding & Event Videographer Association (WEVA) International? Have a list of important questions ready for the interview, and dig as deep as you can.

2. Does the Video Company have a reasonable history in the event business? The oldest company is not necessarily the best, but longevity does speak rather loudly of success. Is the Video Company exclusively involved in video or is it a sideline? Beware of companies that sell other services as well.

3. Check references! Bear in mind that companies will provide you with "fan club" users - references that will generally make positive statements (sometimes in return for favors or kickbacks).

4. Insist on watching only videos shot by the person who will actually be shooting your event. Stay away from "ghost" shooters. Get a firm commitment before you sign a contract.

5. Beware of short demo videos. You really want the entire wedding & reception made available when you visit a studio. You can always fast forward.

6. Ask how audio is captured both during the ceremony and at your reception. Assuming you want to hear the soloist in the balcony, the bride and groom exchanging vows and rings and the officiant talking to the couple and your scripture reader(s). How is the Video Company going to capture the audio so that you can hear it all on your video in a clear crisp tone?

7. Do not sign a contract or make a down payment without first reviewing all applicable paperwork, (i.e. contract prices etc.) in the comfort of your home. Be sure you understand when the contract time begins and ends, cost for overtime, how many copies you get, what comes with each package and what do you pay extra for. Make a copy of all the paperwork after you have signed it but before you return it with your deposit.

8. Most reputable companies are going to book fast. You should consider booking at least a year prior to your wedding date.
