Choose your DJ

To avoid wedding day disappointments, you will want to be sure that your disc jockey service is a registered and legitimate business. Check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints and the number of dissatisfied clients. If the disc jockey is a member of a professional association this may help ensure that your day will be handled in a professional and competent manner, freeing you to worry about remembering the rings or where to honeymoon.

Before hiring a professional disc jockey for your wedding, keep these qualifications in mind:

Accessibility: Your professional disc jockey or company should be willing to meet you beforehand so that you can see the operation, view the equipment and music library and hear a demonstration. Credentials and testimonials that include current names and addresses should be available.

Back Up Plan: Ask about the disc jockey's plans for back up personnel or equipment in case of illness, accident or other unforeseen circumstances.

The Contract: Be sure you obtain a written contract confirming the booking and all agreements between you and the professional disc jockey. Your contract should have a cancellation clause and a logical procedure for both the client and disc jockey to follow.

Disc Jockey Attire: A professional disc jockey will dress appropriately according to your wishes. There should be no extra cost for formal attire.

Equipment: Expect professional audio equipment, not a home sound system. The equipment should be cased to give the best presentation and protection.

Music Format: Meet with the DJ prior to the event to discuss your ideas for music selections, and inquire if he or she will honor special music request.

Party Procedure and Etiquette: Choose a professional disc jockey who is knowledgeable about and willing to work with you in planning the announcements, schedule of events and other aspects of your wedding and reception.

Professionalism: Be sure you choose a service that is registered, incorporated and/or insured.

Far too often, the bride and groom choose their professional disc jockey as an afterthought, not realizing the impact the presentation of the music and the disc jockey have in creating the mood. Your wedding is a memory you want to last forever. Take the time to plan every aspect of it very carefully.
